This was commented by Professor Pedro Vera López of the Industrial High School of Recoleta, last Friday, April 19, at the first 2024 School Research and Innovation meeting of the Explora North Metropolitan Region Project. This year, 95 School Science Clubs will participate, 7 Mini Explorador@s and 50 teachers from various communes of the RM.
The Central House of the University of Chile, It was the locality that brought together teachers from various disciplines and educational establishments of the North Metropolitan Region, who during this first meeting learned about the methodology of "School Research and Innovation – IIE", which seeks to support teachers and students through training, accompaniment and assignment of scientific advisors that will allow them to learn to ask questions, experience, draw conclusions and seek explanations to understand the natural world, social and/or technological from their experiences.
Pedro Vera López of the Liceo Industrial de Recoleta, She shared her reflection on gender inequality that she observed in her tech classroom. Noticing that only three of the 25 students were girls, felt the need to take action and talked to her classroom about applying to School Science Clubs. "One day walking to school, I questioned this situation and wondered why this would happen, whether men and women have the same abilities, When I arrived at the school, I proposed it to them and we decided to apply. We will study the social representation of the role of women in industrial high schools".
IIE is one of the initiatives of the Explora Associative Project of the Ministry of Science, Technology, Knowledge and innovation, implemented throughout the national territory, through the Explora Projects of each Region. In the Northern Metropolitan Region, is made by Explora RM Norte, which is released by the Advanced Center for Chronic Diseases (ACCDiS ), through the University of Chile and its Faculty of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
During this first meeting, The Núcleo Milenio Migra participated, "It is very important for teachers to take ownership of these concepts, since, as many have said,, Chile changed, Chile is different and we will never do the previous Chile again. From now on, Chile is going to make a country that is made up of migrants, and the sooner we understand it, the sooner we understand it, it's going to be easier to work on the differences and from there build something better," explained Grace Amigo, speaker and associate researcher at the Núcleo Milenio Migra.
The meeting was also attended by representatives of the Office of the Vice-Rector for Research, UC Research Ethics and Safety Unit, Amanda Nogueira and Verónica Arenas, who gave a talk-workshop, in which the concept of how we generate knowledge and take into account the participants or living beings that are part of this process was worked on, "Understanding that creating knowledge is not just about extracting information, but it should be a virtuous process where people have to take into account the sensitivity of the research teams and learn to ask the research questions and know how to do it," Amanda explained.
On the other hand, Veronica commented that associated with this, There's also the safety of the investigation, where it is essential that teachers know the importance of research being carried out in a safe environment for those who carry out these procedures.
To finish, teacher Iris Smoje from the Valentín Letelier High School, stressed his gratitude and excitement for participating for the first time in IIE, "Together with my colleagues from various subjects, Language, Science and Religion, We are very motivated to provide this window of knowledge to our students, Without a doubt, this opportunity is a privilege that not all students enjoy.".
Coming soon, the Explora RM North team will assign the scientific advisors to each School and Mini Explorador@s Science Club, who will guide them in their research and methodologies.
