The Santo Tomás University opened its doors to welcome the teachers who will be part of the Mini Explorers of the School Research and Innovation initiative (Iie) directed by the Explora North Metropolitan Region Associative Project.
The first meeting was held on April 25 and marked the beginning of the educational journey in which these 6 teachers will be accompanied by the team of the Explora Associative Project in the Northern Metropolitan Region, of the Ministry of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation. Project, led by the Advanced Center for Chronic Diseases (ACCDiS ) of the University of Chile and its Faculty of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
The Mini Explorers initiative seeks to provide comprehensive support to participants, offering training, advice and the assignment of expert scientists who will guide educators and students through an inquiry cycle. This process will allow them to develop essential skills for the conception and execution of school innovation projects, addressing problems detected in their educational communities.
This year the theme “Environment and Innovation” will be worked on in the area of Natural Sciences, and 7 projects belonging to Renca, Providence, Quinta Normal and Quilicura will participate, all with the aim of generating a positive impact in their respective communities.
During the day, Dr. Fabio Labra, academic of the Doctorate in Conservation and Biodiversity Management at UST, also a researcher at the Research and Innovation Center for Climate Change (CiiCC) gave a presentation, which aimed to train teachers on issues related to the environment. This is aligned with the commitment of the Santo Tomás University to promote environmental education and sustainability.
Among the participants was Professor Paulina Galaz, from the Santa Bárbara de Quilicura School, who shared her expectations for this year. Galaz expressed his enthusiasm for learning new educational strategies provided by Explora, with the aim of involving boys and girls in reflective and creative learning, where they are protagonists and teachers act as facilitators.
The collaboration between the Explora RM Norte project and the Santo Tomás University, as an associated institution, promises to provide opportunities for the professional and personal development of the participating teachers.
